I choose to take the Avoidance method for many different reasons. First of all I knew that people were going to go crazy because their were too many students in the class. Everyone had a different idea of how they wanted to do something. I didn't want to go bother and go crazy by going from student to student and have to yell on the top of my lungs.
Second of all I knew that by the end of the class comes people will start relizing we don't have too much time and will come to a decision. 50 percent of the class failed anyway because the average score was 68. So most of the students would have their grade on their minds and make the best descion for me and the rest of us that choose the Avoidance method. I don't think I would have choosen any other way because I am a very quiet person.

Satinderpal,
I agree with you. Most people who chose Avoidance that day did so not because they thought nothing could be done (as the lecture slide implies) but mainly because the overall scores were so terrible that something would be done by someone anyways or half of the class would have to drop, and because it was easy to realize that all of us couldn't really participate in the discussion. Therefore, in this situation Avoidance was not a way of withdrawal but just another way of participation. Only few people would need to make proposals and the rest of us make sure they were good enough and agree. Just like you, I moved into Avoidance after it became clear that full participation meant screaming and fighting. I am not so quiet but I don't believe in open public conflicts.
exactly what i thought =D
I also started out with the avoidance method. It was to hectic in class because everyone was doing their own thing. You are right because half the class did fail since the avg was so low. Because more people failed, they all wanted to get a curve and fix their score. That is why it was so chaotic. If less people failed, it would have been more peaceful because the rest would not have cared enough. The point is I believe we all got a fair deal out of it.
